The 2nd Annual Tattoo Art Auction to Benefit the Wounded Knee District School, Friday March 11, 2016

Eight of Swords Gallery announces plans to host a second fundraiser to benefit Lakota students from the Wounded Knee District School (WKDS) on South Dakota’s Pine Ridge reservation. The event, called The Warriors’ Fund, is slated for Friday, March 11th at 7:00 PM and will showcase original artwork from nearly fifty top-notch tattooers, including New York City veterans like Timothy Hoyer, Virginia Elwood, and Stephanie Tamez. Work from Cheyenne Randall, a native artist who has gained popularity in recent years with his “shopped tattoo” photographs under the name @IndianGiver, will also be featured, as well as Wounded Knee Skateboards, a group that was instrumental in building a skate park on Pine Ridge, and raises awareness through artwork and skate decks.

Last year, the Warriors Fund raised $10,000 to support the WKDS; specifically, to stock its food pantry and fund training for suicide prevention counselors. The WKDS serves 134 students ranging from kindergarten through eighth grade. Reservation schools throughout the country are often geographically isolated, contend with a severe lack of funding, and have some of the highest dropout rates in the nation. Adults and children alike are faced with addiction, crime, and suicide –– but one of the most immediate issues for the students at WKDS is hunger. While every child qualifies for free meals during the school day, the need is greater at home.

With only a single convenience store on the reservation and the nearest grocery store a staggering 70 miles away, Principal Alice Phelps took matters into her own hands and started a food pantry that she runs out of the school for families that are the most in need. And that is what the Warriors Fund aims to keep stocked.

About the Organizers

The Warriors’ Fund is organized by Patrick Sullivan, along with tattooers Dave C. Wallin and Betty Rose, Eight of Swords’ owner and manager, respectively. Wallin, a Dallas native, has been tattooing for twenty-three years, with over half of them spent in New York. He opened Eight of Swords in 2011. Betty Rose is a ten year veteran of the business and began working at Eight of Swords in 2013. She has since helped organize previous events and is the creator of LadyTattooers.com, an online community spotlighting women in the tattoo industry.

Please join us as we celebrate the coming of spring with the opening reception of “Equinox Solstice” by Gerald Feliciano. This event is sponsored by Industry City Distillery and Blue Point Brewing Company. Our lovely back patio will be open so you can enjoy libations outdoors after perusing the gallery.

There will be an after party held at Passenger Bar (S3rd and Roebling). Drink specials all night with the show flyer, so be sure to pick one up before you leave!

Gerald Feliciano is a painter and tattoo artist at Leathernecks tattoo and East Side Ink in New York. His art career began at the Virginia Commonwealth University where he was exposed to an array of different artists and art mediums. He later became obsessed with tattoo art, its history and its traditions. As a young tattooer he’d always respected and admired artists who painted and used other mediums to express their form of style. Feeling that it was imperative to be well rounded, he started researching art history and found inspiration in the late 1800’s Art Nouveau and art Deco periods. “I love the way Art Nouveau translates to skin, the usage of line weight, color contrasts, and movement really gives a tattoo life and body. What i enjoy the most is the challenge of taking traditional tattoo subject matter and creating something that fits in the realm of nouveau.” says Gerald.

“Equinox Solstice” is a collection of works inspired by the passing of time and seasons. Using limited color palettes, Gerald plans to give the viewer a sense of seasonal time and mood.

The works will be on display in our gallery until May 14th.

“Susan Crawford’s Wild Kingdom” is comprised of a series of pieces that began as notebook sketches of the plants and animals near the artist’s home in Mount Holly NJ. Although she’s encountered spectacular species while diving and hiking in places like Australia, Belize, South Africa and Mexico, sketching the local flora and fauna led her to notice the subtle and unique beauty of these common species closer to home. In particular, she found the ones living in the New Jersey Pine Barrens to be the most inspiring. “The stillness I find there allows me to lose myself, to get in touch with my animal senses: movement, shape, color and sound,” says Susan. And like a magpie, I never seem to return from these sojourns without a souvenir, like a bit of bone, a feather, leaf or a stone.”

A lifetime of observing living things has given Susan the ability to break down subjects into their essential parts. She looks past the individual animal to reveal its rhythm of color and form, taking those lyrical qualities and creating an iconic emblem of nature.
About the Artist:

After giving marine biology a try in college, Susan decided to fall back on a more stable and lucrative profession: illustration. With her artist/writer husband Allen Crawford, she formed Plankton Art Company in 1999.

Susan’s stylized, graceful forms are largely inspired by nature and mid-century modernism. She has worked for Target, Warner Bros., Chronicle Books, Knopf, Ride Snowboards, Hasbro, National Geographic Kids Magazine, Discovery Channel and The Smithsonian National Zoo. The most ambitious project she’s ever worked on was a series of 400 hand-rendered identification key illustrations of fish, plants and other undersea creatures for The American Museum of Natural History’s Milstein Hall of Ocean Life, where her drawings are on permanent display.

Susan’s paintings and drawings have been exhibited at numerous galleries, most notably the Jonathan LeVine Gallery in Chelsea. She lives in a historic Quaker town in Central New Jersey, where she often goes on kayak trips in the Pine Barrens to look for tree frogs and orchids.

The works will be on display in our gallery until April 10th.

The Eight of Swords Art Gallery presents “Fragmented Being”. a collection of works involving plaster cast sculpture, soft sculpture, assemblage, collage, and mixed medium by artist, Sarah Best. “Ultimately what I hope to create is a moment where the inside and outside collapse, allowing closer consideration of self and other.”

Please join us for the opening night on Friday, February 7th from 7-11pm.

The works of Sarah Best exist at once in physical reality, and suspended in a place of memory and imagination within the mind and body. Best experiments with ideas of corporeal space and the figuration of emotion through gestures of the body, revealing emotional truths that lie beneath our everyday interactions. Her works contain inner self-reflections that render visible a paradox: the infinite and continually changing proportions of consciousness, and the finite physical laws of the body. The result is a stark confrontation with the vulnerability and solitude of the human experience.

The opening reception will be sponsored by Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum, Alphabet City Brewing Co, and Whitecliff Vineyard.

After the reception, head over to Passenger Bar (S3rd and Roebling) with us as we keep the party going! Drink specials all night with the show flyer! Be sure to pick one up at Eight of Swords before you leave!

About the Artist:

Sarah Best was born in Alaska where she was raised by wild dogs. Having decided she would rather be literate, she escaped to “the lower 48” eventually landing in New York City. After some time she received a BFA from the School of Visual Arts in exchange for a remarkably large sum of money. She now resides in Brooklyn and is prone to saying “fuck” a lot.

The paintings will be on display in our gallery until March 13th.

Eight of Swords is excited to invite you to our very own Sophie C’est La Vie’s debut solo show, “Giant Little Things”. The opening night will be on Friday, September 13th from 7-11pm.

“Giant Little Things” is an expression of the balance between the very small, showcased in a larger than life way and the very opposite, juxtaposed into impossible predicaments. Sophie C’est la Vie uses multiple mediums in creating these visual narratives balancing paint, collage and ink.is an expression of the balance between the very small, showcased in a larger than life way and the very opposite, juxtaposed into impossible predicaments. About the Artist:

Sophie C’est la Vie transfers images of innocent and raw beauty into visual allegories balanced with softness and occasional subtle darkness. Pulling from organic references as well as hints of whimsical satire, her current work engages the individual and inspires them to look deeper into the subject matter and see more than what immediately meets the eye. Having lived across the country and abroad, Sophie draws her inspiration from the ever changing movement in life and creative forms around her. A native Texan, she currently resides and works as a painter and a tattoo artist in Brooklyn, New York. She has been featured in a number of publications including Inked Magazine and Working Class Magazine. Her art has been displayed in various group exhibitions in New York City with “Giant Little Things” being her debut solo exhibition.

The paintings will be on display in our gallery until October 10th.
